There we go - ... ( 9 months ago by askegg)
There we go - EVERYONE should be able to bid on the contracts and be evaluated on their professional merits. This is NOT the case at the moment. Religious people are automatically granted positions above others - it's only if there are NO religious people available will the Government look to other qualified people. Tell me how this is the equality you and I both desperately desire?
Again, you keep harping on about fairness, when it is clear the current system is not.
I will repeat ... ( 9 months ago by askegg)
I will repeat myself.
The current program will automatically grant the contract to the religious group over every other. While you argue with the straw man, I will be over here demanding equality for ALL groups.
trifle.... I have ... ( 9 months ago by AstoundingTheist)
trifle.... I have tried replying to you and it always gets stripped away...I will try it here.
I work on the assumption that it is appropriate for governments to subcontract some of the services it is pledged to deliver. I assume that the government will have in place rules governing this process to ensure fairness and accountability. I further assume the government would outline its expectations for this sub contract and that this would include adherence to secular values. I also assume..
that the government ... ( 9 months ago by AstoundingTheist)
that the government would have in place an over sight body to see that its goals were being met and that no one's rights were being trampled on.
When all of this was satisfied I would feel safe awarding the contract to gays, lesbians, atheists, communist, buddhists, christians, etc.
There is no need to discriminate based on any of the above if you have put in place the appropriate secular safeguards.
If the State denies someone of religion or no religion a chance to do the job at that....
These assumptions ... ( 9 months ago by askegg)
These assumptions are wrong and that's the problem. The Government has set up the rules to promote religious individuals over others regardless of their training, qualifications, experience, or professionalism.
Quit flying the persecution flag and understand I am agreeing with you. These rules should be in place, but are completely lacking. The Government is not acting secular in relation to this program and is violating the rules of the land they are meant to uphold.
they are qualified ... ( 9 months ago by AstoundingTheist)
they are qualified to do only because of their beliefs they are then seriously in violation of the separation of church and state.
I am not flying any ... ( 9 months ago by AstoundingTheist)
I am not flying any persecution flag because I in no way feel persecuted. I am always ready to defend the rights of those who are presently unpopular in society against the majority.
If your government is seriously pushing one faith over all faiths then your country is no where near as democratic, mulitcultural, progressive as I once thought.
I had no idea that Australia is a virtual theocracy. On the other hand I only have your word on this and you are by any counts a prejudiced witness
They renewed the ... ( 8 months ago by AnonymousDiv0)
They renewed the NCSP? It was bad enough they even *started* it.
"Chaplaincy" is an inherently religious office. Regardless of not being an actual law, Federal government is expressly prohibited by rhe constitution from promoting religions.
It is a blatant violation of the constitution, both in letter and in spirit.
The constitution guarantees very few things (which is why we need an enforcable bill of rights), but prohibiting the federal government from endorsing religion is one of them.
Guys you are ... ( 8 months ago by MsStormeye)
Guys you are barking up the wrong tree! If you want this program to be ineffective you should lobby for it to remain a gov't program. The Gov't know if they fund it, they control it ... set it free and you will see it become twice as influential.
It's not that I ... ( 8 months ago by askegg)
It's not that I want the program to be ineffective, or even eradicated, but that the heavy religious overtones be removed completely. Government has no place enforcing religious opinions on the people.
@askegg - Just ... ( 8 months ago by MsStormeye)
@askegg - Just trying to follow your logic in this video ... does he mean that because not all of the people sent the survey returned it, that the 97% approval of those who did complete is not valid? I guess there is inherent error in the sample because maybe those against didn't bother completing but that must be the same with all surveys?? Any idea?
The survey results ... ( 8 months ago by askegg)
The survey results are irrelevant. The success of the program is irrelevant.
What matter here is that religious groups get automatic advantage over others who may be more qualified. This is against the letter, if not spirit, of the Constitution.
that doesn't answer ... ( 8 months ago by MsStormeye)
that doesn't answer my question but thx anyway. Oh and sorry I didn't mean to imply that you were the video author :) BTW, I think the word religious or religion clouds the discussion ... think of it as groups of people with a particular worldview. That makes it easier to compare apples with apples.
I agree thought that the elected should not promote things that the electors don't want them to.
I know it doesn't ... ( 8 months ago by askegg)
I know it doesn't answer your question, but it is not the point I am making here.
It does not matter what the community, schools, majority of people, or individuals believe. The government should make NO comment on religious matters - that is what secular means.
The fact the majority of the population has a particular view does not matter. This is not a democracy.
BTW - I am the video author :)
I'm not opposed to ... ( 8 months ago by MsStormeye)
I'm not opposed to what you are saying ... but at any one time, someone's worldview is being represented and someone's ignored. How should we decide who's gets respected on any issue? Take any debated issue you like ... You have to have some way of deciding and we have chosen representative gov't even if it doesn't work that well :) Anyway good luck and enjoy life.
We have suffered ... ( 8 months ago by Choowbz)
We have suffered for the last decade under Christian employment schemes
masses of taxpayers funds went to supporting amateur employment agency's like the salvation army and mission Australia
Costello's baptists made our rules and this is just a residue
Its also a way of employing church members
If implemented it will fail as Aus parents have successfully kept religion out of state schools
but it will give the church an income for the duration
Wasn't state and ... ( 8 months ago by IceHammer58)
Wasn't state and church separated?
Promoting one religion doesn't offends other religions?
The point of school is to learn science, a bastion, what if this shit will be pushed in the schools too?
And that's a lot of money anyway, isn't there a better place for it?
Nah, these are really just rhetorical questions, what I really wanted to ask is where are we going?
Dark ages coming back?
Seriously, with all those crazy Christians out there, it's not hard to imagine.
(Remember the Jesus Camp.)
Neither world view ... ( 8 months ago by askegg)
Neither world view should be promoted or ignored - that's the entire point. Being secular is equivalent to "no comment" and is exactly what the government are *not* doing in this case. It should make no difference whatsoever what someone's belief about souls, afterlives, deities, or gods are - it makes no bearing on their ability to perform the tasks required.
Politicians are elected to represent the people and uphold the rule of law. Is it too much to expect they adhere to the Constitution?

I confess I only learned of this at Young and Jacksons last Friday. So I find it embarrassing personally and nationally.
I, for one am ... ( 4 months ago by AThagoras)
I, for one am extremely pissed off about the chaplaincy program. I don't want my tax dollars to pay for Christian indoctrination of children.
The government should not be violating our constitution to use our tax dollars to discriminate against non-Christians in public schools.
The chaplains ... ( 4 months ago by AThagoras)
The chaplains should be replaced with trained, qualified counsellors. I don't want chaplains anywhere near my kids.
@AThagoras Exactly. ... ( 4 months ago by askegg)
@AThagoras Exactly. I had a stand up argument with a local pastor who insisted the government was not forcing religion onto people. In the end all I had to do was refer him to the FAQ on the NSCP web site. Now he's on my side (at least on this one issue, since we still disagree on many things - like god for example).
